Visit the famous "Verdun Altar," the best preserved artwork of the Middle Ages. It is named after Nikolaus von Verdun, the artist who created the grandiose enamel and goldsmith work for this jewel at the end of the twelfth century (the altar was altered later).

The abbey was founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III, a saint, who found his last resting place under the altar. Emperor Charles VI (1685 - 1740) added baroque elements after the model of the Spanish Escorial, creating a magnificent Sala terrena, which today serves as fascinating starting point for guided tours on different themes through the abbey.

On these themed paths, you can explore the precious sacral treasury: "The Sacral Tour" leads you through the abbey church with its frescos, the early Baroque monumental organ and the Verdun altar. "The Imperial Tour" gives you an impression of princely Baroque magnificence and the "Wine Cellar Tour" takes you down as far as 36 meters into the Baroque wine cellar.

From May 2011: the archbishop's hat, the "holy crown" of Austria, can now be seen permanently in the newly adapted treasury. Also on exhibit there are the legendary "Veil of Agnes", valuable liturgical garments, reliquary monstrances and the ivory "writing equipment of Saint Leopold".

Tip: The abbey houses the oldest and largest winery in Austria and offers wine tastings and wine sales in the wine shop of the abbey.
