Baroque joie de vivre fills the imperial castles of the Marchfeld which were erected for Prince Eugen of Savoy in the 18th century and alter expanded by Maria Theresia and the Viennese Court to become Austria’s largest ensemble of country castles. Schloss Hof had also been known as the site of splendid events since its construction in 1726.
This ties in with the tradition of opulent holiday cheer: The apartments of Maria Theresa, Emperor Joseph II. and Prince Eugen have been renovated in their authentic style and now form a charming ensemble of baroque attractions. The seven large terraces of the Baroque Gardens, designed with great attention to detail, are just as splendid as they were during the imperial era: Artistic "broderie" beds, dreamy arcades and richly decorated fountains are the setting for tranquil relaxation as well as a grandiose stage for feudal celebrations. An enchanting world of Mediterranean plants unfolds inside Prince Eugen's Orangery. This ensemble, with its two technically and architecturally imposing glass houses and artistically planted paradise gardens, is one of the most beautiful and impressive Baroque grounds of this kind in Europe.
Old Crafts and Original Delights
This baroque adventure world is made complete by an impressive ensemble of utilitarian buildings. The "Meierhof" (dairy) of the palace is one of the most renowned baroque buildings of its kind in central Europe. The authentically furnished utility buildings give an insight into the old handicrafts of woodturners, potters, schnapps distillers and basket weavers; rare species of domesticated animals, including Wallachian sheep and white donkeys are kept here. Fruit and vegetables are also organically grown here and offered for tasting.
