The Archaeological Park is conveniently situated between Vienna and Bratislava, and covers the municipalities of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. It has three parts: at its heart is the open-air museum of Petronell, which is situated on the site of the ancient civilian town. Apart from ruins and reconstructions from the Roman era, it now also offers the total reconstruction of an old Roman residential house, a Villa Urbana and a Roman spa.
The amphitheater at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg is the only visible remains of the military town around the former legion camp. And the 100-year-old Carnuntinum Museum is the biggest Roman museum in Austria, with 1,500 exhibits. Built in the style of an old Roman country villa, it is considered a true treasure house. The symbol of Carnuntum is the Heidentor, a monument that was built for Emperor Constantius II. (354-361 B.C.) and is today considered the best-known Roman monument in Austria.
The Archaeological Park is, of course, also an excellent setting for exciting Roman festivals. Under the motto "Bread and Games", legionnaires in shining armor, heady hetaeras, skilled old Roman craftsmen and traders appear. This is accompanied by the serving of selected delicacies, prepared to traditional recipes. And in the amphitheater, gladiator fights take place to the ancient format with authentic equipment.
