Accessible website
The basic idea behind the internet is that of universal access. To facilitate proper access for people with sensory impairments, the wien.info website has been created to the internationally applicable standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This also includes the guidelines for accessible internet (WCAG 2.0).
- The text can at least be doubled in size. To do this, use the browser menu or the keyboard shortcut CRTL + "+".
- The contrasts correspond to the values that are still easily legible for color-blind or older people. Individual settings are possible as required, such as reading with inverted colors for sensitivity to glare.
- Videos with spoken text are offered with subtitles.
- The website can be used without a graphic interface and without a mouse. It can be operated with assistive technologies, which are used for motor disabilities. Navigation support is available for keyboard and screenreader users, which translates digital content into Braille script and/or is read aloud with speech output. The integrated media player is fully keyboard controllable.
- The website contents are structured so that they can also be understood by blind users with screenreader or Braille display. Amongst other things, reference is also made here to the WAI-ARIA standard currently under development.

www.wien.info won the "BIENE" in bronze in 2010 for its accessible internet presence. The BIENE, which is awarded by the campaign Mensch and the foundation Digitale Chancen stands for "Accessible internet opens new insights" and has been awarded to the best German-language accessible internet offerings since 2003.
Conformity declaration
A representative selection of pages was checked by two experts in the period from the end of June to the beginning of August 2009. The following conformity was established as a result:
- www.wien.info and hofburg.wien.info meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 under http://www.w3.org/TR/2008/REC-WCAG20-20081211/ to Level AA.
- hotels.wien.info and events.wien.info meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 under http://www.w3.org/TR/2008/REC-WCAG20-20081211/ at least to Level A.
The following technologies are required: XHTML 1.0 Strict, CSS 2.1 and JavaScript 1.2, as well as JPG, PNG and GIF for images, Flash for video and audio as well as common download formats (PDF, RTF etc.).
The contents were tested with the following browsers and assistive technologies:
Firefox 2 and 3 on Windows XP with screenreader JAWS 10, Firefox 3 on Windows Vista with screenreader NVDA, IE 6 and IE7 on Windows XP, IE8, Firefox 3 / 3.5, Safari 3 / 4, Opera 9 on Windows XP and Vista, Firefox 3 / 3.5 and Safari 3 on MAC OS X and Firefox 3 / 3.5 on Linux Ubuntu.
